Press Release
6 December, 2016
Espoo, Finland - Spark, New Zealand's leading communications service provider, has deployed the country's first 200G per wavelength production fiber link using Nokia's PSS1830 Optical Transport Network (OTN). The Nokia optical solution effectively doubles capacity while reducing cost per bit on the Spark fiber network. As a result, Spark is able to deliver more value and a better experience to its enterprise, retail mobile and broadband customers without the need for major investment in fiber optic cables and other CAPEX/OPEX-related costs.
The deployment of 200G per wavelength is a first for the New Zealand telecommunications industry, and was achieved with the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch. The powerful yet flexible hardware and software allow customers to optimize their networks by balancing capacity and distance for individual wavelengths. Nokia's 200G channel can also co-exist with Spark's 10G and 100G channels, protecting the original network investment.
Spark's new 200Gbps network link connects its core network with the global gateway, and enables the service provider stay ahead of the data demand curve for both residential and enterprise customers. It will help meet continuing strong business and consumer demand for data bandwidth, utilizing existing systems to efficiently boost capacity for current usage and future growth.
200G provides a compelling business case for any operator looking to lower their total cost of ownership while still deploying extra speed and capacity in their existing 1830 PSS networks.
Colin Brown, General Manager of Networks at Spark, said: "Today's digital revolution is driving massive growth in data traffic, with businesses and consumers needing to instantly access and share information anytime, anywhere, doing so quickly, efficiently and securely. Nokia has helped Spark NZ reach a new milestone with our world-class Optical Transport Network, achieving our vision of a data-driven future for New Zealand and underpinning an integrated network including fiber, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, wireless broadband and Wi-Fi."
Ray Owen, head of Oceania at Nokia, said: "Like many operators, Spark has faced relentless growth in bandwidth demand, largely driven by an increase in video streaming by business and consumer users. By taking a flexible approach to this challenge with New Zealand's first 200Gbps fiber link, together with Nokia, Spark is well placed to meet continued demand growth while meeting existing user expectations."

5 December 2016
Washington D.C. - Nokia is to showcase its latest 5G-related innovations at IEEE Globecom 2016, showcasing technologies that will be the basis of the next-generation of dynamic networks. Through demonstrations and plenary discussions at the event, Nokia will show how operators can maximize resources such as spectrum to deliver the vastly increased capacity and speed required to serve the expanded 'fabric' of connected people, machines and devices expected in the 5G era.
Nokia has defined a path to 5G that will enable operators to meet the demands of end users while addressing the new opportunities created by IoT and increased machine-to-machine communications for smart cities, automated driving, connected healthcare, transportation and other vertical industries. Using the Nokia 4.5G Pro and 4.9G technologies as critical steps in the path to 5G, operators will be able to increase network capacity and speeds where and when they need it.
At IEEE Globecom 2016, Nokia will build on the launches, earlier this year, of the 5G-ready AirScale radio portfolio and the commercial introduction of 4.5G Pro, to demonstrate a number of key, complementary innovations that will form the basis of dynamic, intelligent and sustainable 5G networks of the future:
In addition to the technology demonstrations, Hossein Moiin, the Chief Technology Officer of Nokia's Mobile Networks business group, will participate in an executive panel session to identify the path to 5G, discussing the business and technology opportunities as well as the challenges that will be created.
Hossein Moiin, Chief Technology Officer of the Mobile Networks at Nokia said: "We have defined a technology path to 5G that will allow operators to deliver enhancements in capacity and speed and take advantage of the new possibilities created by the connected world. While mobile broadband demand will continue to be driven by use of ultra-high definition video, the ever-growing number of connected machines as well as the need for low-latency and ultra-reliable networks will drive the creation of new opportunities for mobile communications networks.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia has published the industry's first complete templating system for VNF lifecycle management, designed to streamline and automate VNF onboarding, integration and lifecycle management processes.
Today's methods for managing VNF lifecycles - instantiating, monitoring, repairing, scaling, updating and backing-up - are costly, cumbersome and time-consuming. To address this, Nokia has developed an open templating system, aligned with the latest industry standards and open-source tools, to streamline these processes. The template specifications allow service providers and VNF suppliers to take advantage of the automated lifecycle management capabilities of the Nokia CloudBand Application Manager, enabling them to integrate more VNFs faster while reducing the cost and time required to manage VNFs in the cloud.
Nokia's open templating system builds upon the ETSI NFV specifications (IFA011 and IFA014), Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) specifications and OpenStack tools. It provides key functionality to service providers, including VNF definitions for better integration and added support of complex structures, and eliminates the need for customization when providing VNF information to a generic VNF Manager and NFV Orchestrator.
By supporting both Nokia and third-party VNFs, the system gives service providers a much wider selection of virtualized network services they can offer subscribers.
Nokia is currently collaborating with fellow members of ETSI and TOSCA to complete development of VNF templating standards to benefit the entire industry.
Ron Haberman, head of Nokia's CloudBand product unit, said: "One of the goals of NFV has been to foster an open ecosystem of VNF suppliers to give service providers maximum choice in the capabilities they integrate, and to offer subscribers the best available services. By creating an open system that improves the management of VNFs, we aim to make it easier for service providers to quickly add new value-added services to differentiate their offerings, generate new revenue opportunities, and deliver better user experiences."
John Maddison, SVP of Products and Solutions at Fortinet, said: "Vendors are coming together to facilitate the integration, deployment and management of NFV, which is having a profound impact on service providers. Virtual security functions are critical to these efforts and must be fully integrated and managed within these environments. Nokia's open templating system facilitates this for Fortinet's VNFs. With these tools, CloudBand and Fortinet can reduce complexity and streamline integration with multi-vendor solutions to ensure the success and security of NFV."
Mallik Tatipamula, VP of Service Provider Solutions at F5 Networks, said: "Achieving NFV's true promise requires automated VNF lifecycle management in multi-vendor networks. This can be accomplished by using a consistent and predictable package that captures VNF operational aspects while reducing the learning curve. As a VNF supplier, F5 Networks needs flexibility and agility to deploy its virtualized network functions/services into multi-vendor networks. By documenting their open templating system based on de facto standards and standard tool sets, Nokia has made it practical to do so."
Caroline Chappell, principal analyst at Analysys Mason, said: "VNF onboarding is one of the major challenges the industry must solve to ensure the long-term success of NFV. This will require a standards-based approach that automates the onboarding process and minimizes its complexity. Publicly available guidelines that build upon ETSI NFV ISG and OASIS TOSCA work are an important resource for the market. They provide an exemplar for VNF onboarding that can help harmonize the fragmented vendor approaches we've seen so far."
